Clean Power To the rPod

I figured since I leave my rPod connect to shore power all of the time and the power at the camp grounds can be a bit iffy at times I should install some protection for my camper. I wouldn't plug my television into an electrical outlet without a surge protector, so why wouldn't I do the same for my camper. There are a lot of electronic devices including a radio, television, microwave, refrigerator, and much more in our RVs and campers today. Why would we want to risk these devices to a power surge or over / low voltage? Ok Ok Ok. I Can't take full credit to coming up with this idea. I have to give some credit to my colleagues on the rPod Facebook group for reminding the importance of this.

After some research and asking my colleagues on the Facebook rPod page I decided purchase the Progressive Industries EMS-HW30C. This unit provides many features including a low power and high power shutoff, surge protection, grounding checks, reverse polarity and much more. Also this unit provides a lifetime warranty and the device is module so you don't have to replace the entire unit if something should fail. One of the main reasons for me choosing this unit over the portable version is that I don't have to remember to plug it in each time I camp, no worries about someone stealing it from the power pole while I'm out and about and I can monitor it from inside the camper. Useful if you're stuck inside during a storm and the power goes out.

On my rPod 178 I wanted to install the unit near the other controls however the space was not available. The second option and the one that was suggested on the rPod Page was to install the unit under the slide out near where the power enters in. This proved to be the location for my installation as well and it also makes sense because if there is a problem with the electric it is corrected as soon as it enters the camper. Installation is pretty straight forward and wasn't that hard. The instructions proved to be accurate and everything was a breeze. The hardest part was trying to maneuver in the tight space beneath the counter. Installation took me about an hour and I didn't run into any issues. I located the main connection and found a suitable place to cut the wire in half. Once the wire was cut I stripped the ends and feed the wires into the box and connected to the marked locations. Then I secured the box to the floor, routed the remote wire over to the side of the cabinet and then placed the cover on the box after one last check all connections were secure.

The next step was to find a location to place the remote read out. Originally I was thinking about installing it above the sink but couldn't find a way to route the wire to the over head cabinet. So the next place of choice was next to the refrigerator on the side of the cabinet. This proved to be one of the easiest places to route the cable and have it secured out of the way. As you can see on the display it shows 12 amps of current. This was because I had connected a small space heater to help keep me warm while I finished up the installation, it also showed the the current / amp meter was working correctly.
